"[F]ear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
This text is well-known to hymn-singers, from "How firm a foundation." Stanza 2: "Fear not, I am with thee; O be not dismayed! For I am thy God and will still give thee aid; I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,..." The entire hymntext, known by memory, helped me through my own "fiery trials." Recommend looking it up, present in almost every hymnal.
Thanks for that reminder, littlerobin. I had not even made the connection, but now I have that wonderful tune in my head! Verses 3 & 4 go on explain what and why we need not fear. Notice they do not say "if through the deep waters I cause thee to go", or "if through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie," but rather "when" in both cases. God assures us we will encounter struggles, but he also assures us that there are good reasons for them and that He will see us through. This is why we need not fear. My favorite verse of "How Firm A Foundation" is the final verse because of its emphatic encouragement: "The soul that on Jesus doth lean for repose, I will not, I will not, desert to his foes; That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.” Thanks be to God!
Join us as we commit to memorizing scripture this year. Every month on the 1st and 15th I will post the passage I've chosen for myself. You can either use mine or choose one of your own - either way, please share it by commenting on my post with your name, verse(s) and translation. By the end of 2009, we will each have memorized 24 scripture passages! Even if you missed the start of the year, don't let that keep you from jumping in now.
I am not ashamed to admit that this discipline is not my idea, but rather it was started by Beth Moore on herLPM blog. Check out the 12/27/08 and the 1/1/09 postings for complete info.

Eleanor,
God is speaking through you and your blog at this crucial time in the life of our church. With his His help, we will fear not.

Rawleigh, May we all be willing, as Mary was, to hear His voice and follow His Word! God bless us all!
